X Games The Film Review

Some of the best and the boldest extreme athletes around--Danny Way, Shaun White, Travis Pastrana, Kyle Loza among them--can be seen hurtling through space in X Games: The Film. An ESPN documentary, the film first spends some time getting inside the heads of well-known participants in the skateboard, motocross, and rally car competitions. There is much discussion about the danger involved in these sports and why any sane person would allow themselves to face serious injuries or death by constantly raising the bar on what"s possible.
One way or another, every athlete here has the same answer: as soon as one overcomes a challenge, it"s time to plod on to the next obstacle. That way, there is always a reason to go on in life. Sounds simple, but there are psychological nuances up for grabs here. A weary Loza, for example, sounds resigned to a fate of conjuring fresh acrobatics on his motocross bike, advising anyone thinking about starting the activity to forget it. Way, reflecting on a childhood of abuse and neglect, provides a window onto his fantastic drive to face and control danger to himself. X Games: The Film culminates in thrilling competitions, of which the longest and most dramatic is the skateboard challenge. Starting at a breathtaking height atop a very scary ramp, Way, White, Bob Burnquist and others demonstrate incredible skills and, despite broken bones in at least one case, live to see another day. --Tom Keogh Buy This Product - B002RNFSLY
